The man with the long locks was dangerous, Sara had decided. Definitely dangerous. After the truck’s door had opened, he’d stood up and walked out without a word, and without looking back. Then she watched the guy who’d been by the door follow and the sandy blond who had been watching her sleep, get up and do the same. But then he stopped, turned back, held out his hand toward her and said, “Shall we?”
She didn’t know why, but she trusted the man with the sandy blond hair. She didn’t trust the man with the long dark locks however, and now as she stood outside of the truck, it wasn’t hard to figure out why. His face was a dark mask filled with bitter hatred. A hatred she knew all too well. A hatred that burned a scar deep inside her own soul. But there was something else, something about him that she couldn‘t quite figure out. She thought as she frowned at the man.
But, the dangerous man was the least of her concerns she realized as she recognized her surroundings. She had thought she’d be sent back to Howswel, but this was far from the mental institution and much worse. This was Fort Doley, the army base that had once been home to thousands of soldiers until they’d all disappeared and the state of California had closed the base and replaced the soldiers with the Military Force. Soldiers just didn’t suddenly disappear, but unless you wanted the military force at your front door, you didn’t ask questions and you kept your mouth shut.
